DHT Blockers – How Do They Work?

First, DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone, a hormone our bodies produce naturally (and also the primary cause of male pattern baldness).  It’s created when an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase combines with testosterone.  As we age, our bodies produce more, and male pattern baldness starts.

DHT Blockers work by inhibiting the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme.  Basically, a DHT blocker and 5-alpha-reducatase enzyme fit together like a puzzle.  When that happens, the enzyme can’t joint with testosterone to make DHT.  Thus, DHT levels go down, and our hair loss stops.  In many cases, hair will also grow back.

DHT Blockers Reviews – What is the best DHT blocker?

Since blocking DHT is the most effective way to treat pattern baldness, many people are interested in finding the best one.  The three best treatments are as follows:

Finasteride Pills#1 Finasteride:  The most effective way to block DHT is by using finasteride.  It is available only with a prescription, and is a fairly potent inhibitor of DHT.  When taken in 1 mg doses (1 pill a day), it has been shown to stop hair loss and regrow hair in 9 out of 10 men.  Side effects occur in less than 2% of patients, and those who do experience side effects usually see them go away in the first few months of treatment.  Finasteride is expensive, costing about $80 per month at local drugstores (we checked at Walgreens).  Finasteride is approved by the FDA, and is commonly sold as Propecia, Proscar, Avodart, and Dutastride.  It is available for men only.

Minoxidil DHT Blocker#2 Minoxidil:  The second most effective DHT blocker is minoxidil.  It is available without a prescription, and is applied directly to the scalp twice a day.  It works in approximately 85% of men and women at stopping hair loss and regrowing hair.  Minoxidil also improves blood flow to the scalp, which naturally promotes hair growth by allowing for increased nutrient flow to the hair follicles.  Minoxidil is also approved by the FDA and is commonly sold as Rogaine, Provillus, Procerin, and Kirkland.

#3 Natural Supplements:  The third most effective DHT blocker is natural supplements, specifically saw palmetto, which has been shown to be effective at blocking DHT in approximately 60% of all cases.  Vitamin B6 and Biotin are also usually associated with stopping hair loss, and are often included as part of a multi-vitamin.  The problem with natural supplements is they rarely have clinical trials or scientific evidence to back up their claims, so be careful — many marketers promote these products as miracle cures, and they are not.

DHT Blockers – What to buy?

Most doctors recommending combining minoxidil with either finasteride or natural supplements.  You can save money buy purchasing Provillus, which includes minoxidil and a natural supplement (including saw palmetto, vitamin B6, and Biotin).  Alternatively, you can get a free consultation for finasteride from Bosley medical, or purchase minoxidil, saw palmetto, vitamin B6, and Biotin separately from Amazon.
